Tiny Feathered Dinosaur Discovered

Researchers have discovered a new species of feathered but flightless little dinosaur from the Jurassic period.

Remains of the tiny beast, dubbed Eosinopteryx brevipenna, found in northeastern China suggest it was slightly less than a foot long (30 centimeters) and had a short snout and a short tail. Based on the dinosaur's small wingspan and bone structure, researchers believe it would have been able to run around quite easily, but likely couldn't whip up enough of a wing-beat to fly. The dinosaur also sported toes that would have been suitable for walking along the ground, the researchers added.

This birdlike dinosaur's plumage was much more reduced compared with the feathers on some of its contemporaries, which suggests that feathering was already diversified by the Late Jurassic, adapted to different ecological niches and purposes, the researchers said. (The Jurassic period lasted from about 199.6 million to 145.5 million years ago.)

"This discovery sheds further doubt on the theory that the famous fossil Archaeopteryx ? or 'first bird' as it is sometimes referred to ? was pivotal in the evolution of modern birds," researcher Gareth Dyke, a senior lecturer in paleontology at the U.K.'s University of Southampton, said in a statement.

"Our findings suggest that the origin of flight was much more complex than previously thought."

Archaeopteryx was long thought by many to have been the earliest bird. Discovered in 1860 in Germany, it is sometimes referred to as Urvogel, the German word for "original bird" or "first bird." But recent findings suggest late-stage Jurassic Archaeopteryx was actually just a relative of the lineage that ultimately gave rise to birds.

The new research was detailed in the Jan. 22 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

Internet Article Marketing Insight from a Pro: How to Effectively ...

Even though many say it's old hat and that search engines like Google don't like it, I still use article marketing quite effectively to market my products (eBooks) and services (SEO writing company) online.

How Effective Has Article Marketing Been for Me

Well, it's kept me on the first page of Google for many keywords relevant to my niches. For example, if you google the phrases "SEO writing"; "what is SEO writing" and "sell eBooks online" (without quotes) ? all keyword phrases that are relevant to my online businesses -- I'm on the first page as of this writing.

Note: Search results change all the time, but I've consistently been on the first three pages of Google for these keyword phrases since 2009-2010. And it's all because article marketing is one of the most consistent weapons in my online marketing arsenal.

What Is Article Marketing?

For those who may be new to internet marketing, article marketing is when you write an article and submit it to article directories so that others can publish it -- for free -- in their newsletter, on their blog / website, in their off-line newspaper, etc.

Why would you give away free content? Because at the bottom of each article is a resource box (ie, "About the Author" section) where you have a link to your website/blog/online store, etc. This drives traffic back to your site.

And, just how much is this traffic worth ? especially if you can parlay it into a first-page listing on Google?

How Much Is a Listing on the First Page of Google Worth?

Apparently, a lot. According to the SeoPledge.com article, How Much Is First Page Google Worth?:

If you able to perform some SEO on your site and move to #10 from #11 you should see a 143% jump in traffic. . . . As you move up the first page, the jumps do get larger.

Where to Submit Articles

As mentioned above, you submit articles to free article directories. There are hundreds of them (just?Google?"article directories" to find a list. FYI, EzineArticles.com is the number one rated article directory on the web. It can be cumbersome to get an article approved there, but it's worth it ? especially if you submit on a regular basis. I've submitted close to 400 articles to this site over the years.

Article Marketing ? The Reason I Sell 5 Figures Worth of eBooks Per Year

I sell four figures worth of eBooks per month (five figures per year). And my number one eBook marketing tactic is article marketing. Now that I've hopefully convinced you of how effective article marketing can be, following are four things you can do to make it effective in 2013 ? and beyond.

4 Effective Article Marketing Strategies for 2013

1. Say Something: As in, write BENEFICIAL information. Article marketing is just another form of content marketing, which means dispensing helpful information to assist web surfers in making an informed buying decision.

Many get frustrated with article marketing; saying it "doesn't work."

Baloney!

It works ? if your article is helpful, meaning you can't just throw together a 300- or 400-word article of generic information that can be found all over the web. That type of info doesn't work; it doesn't move consumers to buy.

But if you invest some time into writing clear, concise, helpful articles to distribute, not only will they generate sales, you'll get greater distribution because prospective publishers will come to rely on the fact that you dispense great info.

2. Write Longer Articles: I remember when an article only had to be 250 words or so to be distributed by article directories. Now, most of them require an article to be at least 400 words. Mine tend to be in the 400 to 600-word range.

FYI, I started my own article marketing directory last year. The link to it is in my bio below; there are tons of samples there.

3. Don't Keyword Stuff: Search engines like Google are moving away from rewarding keyword stuffed content to rewarding what's known as themed SEO content. So, strive for a keyword density of only between 1-2%.

4. Create/Leave a Web Footprint: With Google's emphasis on "Authorship," it's more important than ever to create/leave a footprint on the web. This way, search engines know who you are ? and can reward your content. One of the quickest ways to develop/leave a web footprint is via social media.

So, create and start interacting on social media ? especially the biggies like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus.

I got on the first page of Google recently for a keyword phrase I'd been trying to rank for for at ?least six months (SEO content writing) ? all because I shared a piece of content with that keyword phrase in it via my Google Plus profile. Now, I'm in two spots on the first page of Google for this phrase. Go figure!

Article Marketing: Conclusion

You'll come across a lot of negative stuff about article marketing on the web ? especially since Google's Panda and Penguin updates.

SEO Article Marketing: Over 1,000 Articles Written!

Once I learned how to write SEO content in 2007, I upped my article marketing game because knowing SEO is like having the keys to the online marketing kingdom. I've been using this form of online marketing since 2002, and have written over 1,000 articles to promote my own products and services (and a few thousand more for clients via my SEO writing company's article marketing services).

In short, hands down, article marketing is some of the most effective internet marketing you can do. And the best part of all ? it's free!

Fast food linked to higher asthma and allergy risk

New study links fast-food consumption to a greater risk for developing asthma, eczema and allergies.

Tue, Jan 15 2013 at 8:56 AM

Teens and kids who eat a lot of fast food may be at greater risk for developing asthma, eczema?and allergies, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal's respiratory magazine,?Thorax.

?

For the study, researchers from?the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom looked at surveys from more than 500,000 kids in 51 countries to determine how diet affected their allergy-related risks. They found that?eating fast food three times a week may lead to asthma, eczema?and itchy, watery eyes in children. ?

?

Researchers surveyed kids and their parents to determine whether or not they experienced symptoms of allergies, asthma and eczema. Participants also shared what types of foods they consumed each week. In the study, children in their early teens who ate fast food three or more times each week had a 39 percent greater risk of severe asthma. For 6- and 7-year-olds, there was a 27 percent increased risk. Overall, kids who ate fast food three or more times a week had about a 30 percent increased risk of severe allergies. The results were consistent across all age groups regardless of gender or socioeconomic status. ?

?

Interestingly, kids who ate fruit were able to cut their risk of developing these conditions. Researchers found that kids who ate three or more portions of fruit each week reduced their risk of severe asthma, eczema and allergies by between 11 and 14 percent.

Newtown residents will join gun control march in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Residents from Newtown, Conn., are joining a march on Washington for gun control on Saturday with parents, pastors, survivors of gun violence and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Organizers said they are expecting thousands of participants for the rally on the National Mall, including about 100 from Newtown and buses from New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. Others are flying in from Seattle, San Francisco and even Alaska. They will gather Saturday at the Capitol Reflecting Pool at 10 a.m. and will begin marching down Constitution Avenue toward the Washington Monument at 11 a.m. A rally is planned on the monument grounds at noon.

Molly Smith, the artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner organized the march, inspired by the Connecticut massacre that killed 20 first graders and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School, she said. The gunman also fatally shot his mother and committed suicide.

"With the drum roll, the consistency of the mass murders and the shock of it, it is always something that is moving and devastating to me. And then, it's as if I move on," Smith said. "And In this moment, I can't move on. I can't move on.

"I think it's because it was children, babies," she said. "I was horrified by it."

While she's never organized a political march before, Smith said she was compelled to press for a change in the law. The march organizers support President Barack Obama's call for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines as well as for universal background checks for gun sales. They also want lawmakers to require gun safety training for all buyers of firearms.

As a theater person, Smith said murdering a child is something you can never show in theater. Even in the Greek tragedy, "Medea," the main character kills her children, but that happens off stage, Smith said.

After the Connecticut shootings, Smith posted something on Facebook and drew more support to do something. The group One Million Moms for Gun Control, the Washington National Cathedral and two other churches eventually signed on to co-sponsor the march. Organizers have raised more than $46,000 online to pay for equipment and fees to stage the rally.

Lawmakers from the District of Columbia and Maryland are scheduled to speak. Actress Kathleen Turner is expected to appear, along with Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund and Colin Goddard, a survivor from the Virginia Tech massacre.

Smith said she supports a comprehensive look at mental health and violence in video games and films. But she said the mass killings at Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., all start with guns.

"The issue is guns. The Second Amendment gives us the right to own guns, but it's not the right to own any gun," she said. "These are assault weapons, made for killing people."

Coachella Lineup 2013 - Business Insider

The highly anticipated Coachella 2013 lineup was just announced and the people are not pleased.

While it was rumored the Rolling Stones (who played ten 50th anniversary shows in recent months) or Daft Punk would be headlining, instead the Red Hot Chili Peppers and lesser-known bands Blur, Phoenix, and the Stone Roses are taking top billing during the three-day festival.

Second tier acts include Jurassic 5, Vampire Weekend, Moby and Hot Chip -- what is this, 2009?

With no big name electronic dance music DJs like last year's David Guetta or Justice, no hologram cameos, and no Rolling Stones, this year's festival feels stale and seems to fall short.

Perhaps it has something to do with AEG, the festival's promoter, currently being up for sale for at least $8 billion.

It's also still unclear why, after what Rolling Stone calls "overwhelming evidence," the Rolling Stones were replaced by the Stone Roses -- a band this music-lover has never even heard of.

"The Indio, California festival appeared on the band's [Rolling Stones] own official app in December under their tour dates section," reports Rolling Stone. "And festival organizers later used their official Facebook page to post a photo of a stone rolling on the Empire Polo Grounds, where Coachella is held."

But with or without the Stones, the show must go on, as they say.

?

Coachella kicks off on April 12th through April 14th and reprise the following weekend, April 19th through 21st.

Here's the official lineup from coachella.com, see the angry Twitter reactions below:

Fix the Internet's Biggest Annoyances This Weekend

Fix the Internet's Biggest Annoyances This WeekendThe internet is full of knowledge, but also full of annoyances. Nevertheless, with some clever tricks and helpful tools you can eliminate most of the bad stuff and retain the good. Get your internet experience in top form this weekend.

Block or Ignore Ads

Fix the Internet's Biggest Annoyances This WeekendWhile you can't always block ads with one of our favorite browser extensions AdBlock Plus without causing issues on certain sites, you can find a number of ways to ignore them with less-aggressive tools. No Hulu Ads simply mutes Hulu ads. (Hush does the same thing, but just on OS X.) Flashblock for Firefox and Chrome keeps Flash out entirely, and that's the source of the most annoying ads. If you want to see any blocked Flash content, however, you can just click through and you're good to go. As a bonus, this will help save battery life when browsing on your laptop. Often times a combination of these tools will work best, as blocking video ads, and even some flash content, causes issues with certain web sites. If you make AdBlock less aggressive and use these other tools to fill in the blanks, you'll have a better ad-free browsing experience.

View Region-Restricted Content

Fix the Internet's Biggest Annoyances This WeekendSome sites?especially ones that stream video?block you from accessing their content unless you're in a particular country. For example, Hulu doesn't really work outside of the United States and BBC's iPlayer requires you to be in the UK (essentially). Hola Unblocker solves this problem for most of the common sites like those previously mentioned plus Netflix, Pandora, and the ITV Player. While some sites work outside of their countries of origin, content rights vary and unblocking can open up more options. To open up virtually any other site based in the US or UK, try TunnelBear. It's basically a free VPN (with a data limit) for OS X and Windows that'll help you access blocked content by making it seem like you're in another country. Sites will load slower, of course, but it'll work on practically anything.

Make Specific Websites Suck Less

Fix the Internet's Biggest Annoyances This WeekendThere are many ways to fix problems with specific sites. Social Fixer makes Facebook infinitely better and requires very little configuration. A few browser extensions can significantly improve YouTube so you don't need to suffer annoying comments or constant pop-up notes on videos. Gmelius soups up Gmail so you don't have to look at ads and can add missing features. Overall, Userscripts and Userstyles can make any annoying web site feature go away or just look nicer. With a little know-how, you can customize most sites to your exact preferences. Gmail, in particular, has some really great options.

Bolshoi chief will recover enough sight to work again: doctor

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Bolshoi Ballet's artistic director will recover enough eyesight to return to work after a masked assailant threw acid in his face, a doctor said on Thursday.

Sergei Filin, 42, one of the most talked about figures in Russia as head of the ballet for nearly two years, was attacked outside his house on his way home from the prestigious theatre on January 18.

Russia's top eye doctor played down fears the talent director would be blinded and never be able to work again, assessing his condition as moderately severe.

"He has acid burns in both eyes: more severe burns in the right eye, lighter on the left side," said Vladimir Neroyev, who took part in some of Filin's four eye operations - two on each eye - since the attack.

Neroyev said it was too early to say how bad the damage would be but that the former ballet dancer would retain at least some eyesight in each eye.

"I think in any case he will be fully fit for work," Neroyev said.

But Filin faces at least a year of medical treatment and rehabilitation with his next surgery planned for Monday.

The Bolshoi Theatre has seen many power struggles among dancers and directors but the acid attack is thought to be among the most serious in its 200-year history.

Filin has said he had been receiving threats for more than a month before the attack. Dancers and administrators have suggested envy or resentment as a possible motive since Filin's job gave him the power to make or break careers. No arrests have been made so far.

Russia's top specialists are treating Filin in Moscow, Neroyev said, but he may decide to travel abroad for further treatment.

"The situation now is stable, there is no deterioration," he said. "It has even improved slightly and this is very good. There is hope and optimism the treatment will be effective."

Robin Roberts back on "Good Morning America" set

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Robin Roberts visited the "Good Morning America" set Thursday for the first time since the anchor underwent a bone marrow transplant in September.

Cameras did not roll as she eased back into the swing of things, however, nor is Roberts expected to resume her on-air work until February.

Instead she returned to the Times Square studio where the ABC morning program is shot for a behind-the-scenes test run this morning. A spokeswoman for the network reports that she was at the studio at 5 a.m. after waking up at 3:45 a.m.

During a live appearance last week on "Good Morning America," Roberts said that doctors told her she could begin working again, because the operation appears to have been a success.

"I'm coming home," Roberts said. "We're talking now a matter of weeks, not months."

Roberts had to undergo the procedure after she was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. She left the show in August.

As part of her dry-runs, she is seeing how her body adjusts to a punishing schedule that requires morning anchors to wake up in the early morning hours and to see how her skin reacts to the harsh television lighting.

"My doctors want me to see how many people I actually come in contact with," Roberts said in her interview last week. "How my body reacts to the stimulation, that's code word for stress, of being in the studio environment."

Blogger contests ex-cheerleader's libel suit

COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? A gossip website operator defended himself Wednesday against a defamation lawsuit by arguing that a former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader featured in posts on the site is a public figure.

Hooman Karamian, who goes by the name Nik Richie, testified in a northern Kentucky courtroom that cheerleader Sarah Jones was on national television and participated in community events because of the high-profile job. Public figures trying to prove defamation have a higher burden than people who aren't in the public eye.

Richie, 33, also said his Scottsdale, Ariz.-based website, thedirty.com, is similar to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in the way it features user content. Richie has said the two posts cited in Jones' lawsuit included text and photos submitted by people who knew her.

"My position is freedom of speech, and people are entitled to their own opinion," Richie testified. "This is America."

Jones, a onetime teacher who pleaded guilty to having sex with her 17-year-old former student, is suing Richie and the website over two posts in 2009 that were unrelated to her relationship with the teen.

Her attorney, Eric Deters, is arguing that the posts tarnished her reputation as a teacher and Bengals cheerleader before she ever had a relationship with the teen, causing her severe emotional distress.

Jones, 27, testified Wednesday before Richie took the stand that the posts were devastating.

In the first post in October 2009, Jones is pictured smiling for the camera with a former kicker for the Bengals. The caption says she had sex with every member of the team.

The second showed her in a bikini from one of the Bengals calendars. It claimed that her ex-husband contracted chlamydia and gonorrhea after cheating on her with more than 50 women, and that he likely gave it to her.

Richie, who lives in Orange County, Calif., with his wife and 1-year-old daughter, said in an interview last week that the comments came from someone who knew Jones and had access to photos she posted on Facebook. He said the only thing he wrote about Jones was in the second post, saying, "Why are all high school teachers freaks in the sacks?"

"As a teacher with those things on the Internet, that I slept with all the Bengals and had two STDs, I didn't want to face my students," Jones said Wednesday, adding that she had to tell all her classes that the posts were untrue.

Under questioning from Richie's attorney, Jones testified that she kept both jobs after the posts and that no one who knew her believed they were true.

Richie's attorney, Alexis Mattingly, showed jurors glossy calendar photos of Jones wearing bikinis and reminded them that Jones lied to police, her family and her bosses about her relationship with the teenager.

She also read the jurors text messages between Jones and the teen and transcripts of her interviews with police, all in an effort to attack her credibility and character.

Jones has said repeatedly that she has only had sex with two people, her former husband and the teenager.

Jones pleaded guilty in October to having sex with the teen under an agreement that let her avoid jail time. The two are still together.

Jones resigned from Dixie Heights High School and from the Bengals cheer squad in late 2011 after four years in both jobs. Deters said at the time that Jones had done nothing wrong but stepped down because of rumors about her relationship with the teen.

Testimony in the defamation trial is expected to wrap up Thursday and will include footage of Richie from an appearance on "The Dr. Phil Show. The jury could reach a verdict as early as the afternoon.

Patient Wait Times for Appointments Cut by More Than 80 Percent

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Practical changes to patient scheduling have been shown to reduce the time it takes to get a doctor's appointment by more than 80 percent, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics. Researchers at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) found that modest changes like revamping scheduling systems, balancing supply and demand, and developing contingency plans to handle high demand can significantly reduce patient wait times for appointments with subspecialty healthcare providers without adding more physicians.

In some parts of the nation, it can take as long as nine weeks to see a family practitioner, according to a 2012 report that compared wait times in 15 states. Access to specialty care providers often takes even longer.

"By making practical changes to scheduling and managing patient workflow, we were able to reduce the average wait for a new patient appointment from 11 week to two weeks, even with a complex patient population," said Rubina Heptulla, M.D., lead study author and chief of the division of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at CHAM and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Dr. Heptulla treats children with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, and precocious puberty, a complex matrix of conditions that are associated with pediatric obesity. "With obesity at epidemic levels, we are seeing an increase in referrals for treatment. That's why it's important to cut wait times so that we can diagnose and deliver treatment -- some of which may be life-saving -- as soon as possible."

"Our findings also suggest that the quality improvement tools we utilized could have a significant role in addressing the national problem of healthcare access," said Dr. Heptulla.

Researchers analyzed appointment data from January 2008 to November 2011 and conducted detailed reviews of operational data, the scheduling system and the call center that schedules appointments. Each doctor had an allotment of new appointments, but they were often used for follow-up appointments, leaving new patients waiting longer for their appointments. To break this bottleneck, researchers ensured that doctors used the new appointments for new patients and had other staff members manage follow-up appointments.

By keeping the physicians and staff on track with regular team meetings, and monthly meetings with the Medical Director of the Pediatric Ambulatory Sub-specialty Services Dr. Peter Belamarich and The Children's Hospital Montefiore's Medical Director of Quality Dr. Steven Choi, there was a significant improvement and an increase in new patient's visits. There was also a reduction in the time it took to get a follow-up appointment from eight to two weeks.

Dr. Heptulla said this improved efficiency model could be implemented across the health care delivery system to help alleviate barriers and improve access for all patients.

Eat Like You've Been Elected! | Bite Club: Vermont's Food and Drink ...

ShummyMaybe you're a member of the Vermont congressional delegation. Maybe you have tickets for the Obama swearing-in ceremony and an extra $100 to throw around on top of your round-trip ticket to D.C.

Either way, on Sunday you might find yourself at the?Vermont State Society's 2013 Inaugural Reception?in our nation's capital and enjoying a menu prepared by?members of the?Vermont Specialty Food Association.

And if you're staying home, consider this a recipe for a congressional-worthy meal all your own.?

Start with a cheese plate. In D.C., Shummy and co. (shown above at the ribbon cutting for the Mad River Food Hub, where a number of the featured foods are prepared) will be slicing into blocks of 2-year-old maple-smoked cheddar from Grafton Village Cheese, as well as selections from Cabot Creamery and Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery.

Those playing the home game will want to get out their fondue pots. The Washington delegation will be dipping into melted versions of the above cheeses with roasted potato cubes, Empire apple wedges from Champlain Orchards and vegetable crudit?s.

Food-pastaIf that's too fancy for you, apps will also include bags of chips from Gringo Jack's with the Manchester company's own salsa. Be sure to keep your fingers clean by using a fork when digging into pickles from Lyman's Specialties.

The main course includes a pasta bar with vodka and pesto sauces from Bove's and Vermont Fresh Pasta (right) as well as spicy satay sauce from Vermont Harvest Specialty Foods in Stowe. A carving station features Misty Knoll Farms turkey, sausage from Vermont Smoke & Cure and pork from Vermont Salumi. Those wishing to go vegan and gluten-free can grab a bowl of Thai curry squash soup from Joe's Soups at Screamin' Ridge Farm. A range of Vermont dressings will top salads, including the aforementioned satay. Clearly, the lesson is that the Thai peanut sauce goes on everything.

Foodnews-cider_0Vermont-made (though no longer Vermont-owned)?Ben & Jerry's tops the list of desserts, along with apple pies from Ma Bean's Vermont Pie Company, a variety of slices from Vermont Cheesecake Company and Liz Lovely cookies.

But, of course, what really matters is the liquid courage. Whether you're getting up the nerve to talk to one of our representatives?or just steeling yourself for the work week, local liquors will be in full force.

The hard stuff comes from from Whistlepig Straight Rye Whiskey and Vermont Spirits Distilling Co. A wide selection of beers includes sips from Long Trail Brewing Company, Otter Creek Brewing, Magic Hat Brewery and Trapp Family Lodge Brewery. Cider from Essex's Citizen Cider (right) joins wine from Snow Farm Vineyard and Honora Winery.

But when it comes to free-flowing nectar, perhaps it's best to party at home, near a couch and far from lawmakers.

What Values Underlie Sex Education? | Psychology Today

By John T. Chirban

Jim?s daughter Marcie is in fifth grade attending a private school where her dad teaches. Jim came to see me because of unexplained ?anxiety.?

At first, it was hard to zero in on the cause of Jim?s anxiety. Eventually, nervously laughing, Jim tearfully disclosed that he felt he let Marcie down by not standing up for what he believed, as her class was being taught how to place condoms on dildos. Jim said he felt helpless and couldn?t do anything to help Marcie. He and his wife had taken the step of signing a waiver to excuse their daughter from the program. So Marcie was excluded from the sex ed class and given extra assignments. However, the instructor had announced to the student body that only three students in the entire school were not participating in the sexuality curriculum, ?which,? she said, ?was for everyone?s well-being.? In the end, Marcie suffered from being publicly identified.

After that, Jim wanted to stay out of it to save his daughter from any more humiliation. Yet he, his wife, and Marcie were uncomfortable with the class. Jim said he felt like he was ?leading the lamb to the slaughter,? as the program encouraged sexual behaviors rather than simply providing age-appropriate information and also felt that the program did not promote a context of loving relationships where he felt sexuality is best placed.

What do you think about Jim and his wife?s situation? What about Marcie?s? How would you manage it if you didn?t agree with what?s taught in sex ed? Should your child participate in a sex education program when it runs counter to your family?s values? Is sex education value-free and simply informative even when it seems to be directing kids in certain behaviors? On the other hand, how can school systems align sex education programs to embrace diverse family?s values? Can a program possibly adequately meet the various values and needs of students and parents?

???? In April 2006, a Lexington, Massachusetts, teacher used the children?s book King & King as part of a lesson plan on the subject of marriage for a second grade class. King & King is a fairy tale in which a prince falls in love and lives happily ever after?with another prince.

???? Parents? reactions mainly fell into two camps. Some argued the school was indoctrinating children to accept gay marriage as healthy and normal?and in response to this curriculum they demanded a broader parental notification law in the state. Others maintained that the school?s job is to teach children about the world they live in?and Massachusetts, at that time, was the only state in the nation to sanction same-sex marriages.

???? How would you react if your child were in this classroom??

???? As teaching your kids about sex is an ongoing discussion, part of your job is to help your kids make sense of what they learn in school. So open up the lines for any questions and thoughts your kid may have about stuff at school?there are likely to be at least a few! Keep in mind that you could use any story as an important teaching opportunity to discuss viewpoints different from your own. And recognize that your reactions send messages?both verbal and nonverbal?to your children about the issue and sexuality generally.

???? While your school?s sex ed program is important and may solicit your voice, you may not be prepared to confront and shape the sex education program. Yet, take heart, studies confirm that the quality and importance of our communications at home strongly influences our children?s life and often has far-greater impact than sex ed programs.

???? Parents who discuss sex in a loving and honest way actually decrease the likelihood that their child will engage in sexual activity. In fact, kids who share a good relationship with their parents and can honestly discuss their concerns about sex, dating, and love are less influenced by peer behavior regarding drugs, alcohol, and sex and report less depression and anxiety and more self-reliance and self-esteem. These kids are also more successful in school and develop more meaningful relationships.

Several hurt in avalanche on Mt. Washington

Several people, including a Marine who was injured in Iraq, were hurt in an 800-foot avalanche on Mt. Washington on Thursday evening, according to emergency officials.

Emergency crews from a number of towns in the Mount Washington Valley area responded after initial reports that a number of people were missing in an avalanche. Rescuers from the U.S. Forest Service were able to locate three people who had been injured, including retired Marine Sgt. Keith Zeier.

Zeier, 26, of Brooklyn, who lost his leg and suffered a severe brain injury in Iraq in 2006, was climbing Mount Washington's most difficult route to raise funds and awareness for families of Special Operations forces killed and wounded in action.

According to Zeier?s family, he suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was recovering at Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin on Thursday night.

Two other hikers were also injured and initially taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known. A hospital official said they declined comment.

Gorham EMS Director Chad Miller said the avalanche took place at about 5 p.m. and the first emergency call was received at about 7:30 p.m.

Miller said three ambulances and 12 paramedics were initially dispatched after concerns that more members of Zeier?s party were missing. The response was later scaled back.

Zeier?s family said they were concerned immediately after hearing about the avalanche.

"I've been through this before, and I just had a feeling,? said Denise Zeier, his mother.

Keith Zeier has raised over $100,000 for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and continued to raise money with this climb.

Former mayor Sam Adams wastes no time in getting a new job

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Former Portland Mayor Sam Adams has been named executive director of the City Club of Portland, a 100-year-old nonprofit organization that holds Friday forums on public affairs and does research on issues.
???
Adams' election in 2008 made Portland the largest city in the country with an openly gay mayor. But his term was burdened from its early days by his admission he had lied during the campaign about a sexual relationship with a teenager. He didn't run for re-election. Charlie Hales succeeded him this month.
???
In a statement Wednesday, Adams said the job means he can "continue to encourage exceptional urban public policy in a region I love" and said the City Club's "tradition of unbiased, citizen-led policy research remains unique and imperative in today's hyper-partisan environment."

Green Blog: Counting the Vanishing Bees

A new method for monitoring the decline in bee populations may prove a useful tool in much-needed conservation efforts. It requires only a few hundred pan traps: bright shallow bowls partly filled with soapy water or propylene glycol.

When United Nations experts noticed that crop production was flagging in seven countries around the world, from Brazil to Nepal, they contacted Gretchen LeBuhn, an associate professor at San Francisco State University who studies bees.

?The U.N. thought that the problem might be tied to a decline in bee populations,? Dr. LeBuhn said. ?I was hired to see if it would be feasible to monitor this decline.?

Her results, published in the most recent issue of Conservation Biology, outline the new monitoring method, which is remarkably cheap and efficient for tracking national, regional or global bee populations. At any of these scales, the pan traps can do the job at a cost of less than $2 million over five years.

Globally, insect pollination is responsible for almost $200 billion of agricultural production every year, with 70 percent of the main crops used for human consumption dependent on pollinators. The annual contribution of pollinators to essential ecosystem functions like water and habitat health, though not directly valued by markets, likely exceeds $200 billion.

Despite the economic stakes, a decades-long scientific narrative of bee decline and growing concern about an acceleration of this decline, there is no fixed network for tracking bee populations.

?No one really monitors bees,? said Sam Droege, a biologist at the United States Geological Survey and a co-author with Dr. LeBuhn. ?Talk all you want about declines, but it?s based on nothing, really ? no census, no survey.?

A critical feature of the published program is its ability to capture very slight population changes of 2 to 5 percent in a small window of time, thereby acting as an early-warning system. ?Insect populations naturally go up and down a lot,? Dr. LeBuhn said. ?Because they?re so variable, detecting a trend can be hard.?

An even subtler and more intractable challenge is identifying bees once they?ve been collected. Outside of about a half-dozen experts across the country, very few people can efficiently identify bees by genus, much less by species.

?A lot of effort will be required for retraining the next generation of taxonomists,? said Sydney Cameron, an entomologist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a science adviser to the Bumblebee Specialist Group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

For the most part, grants available to taxonomists have shriveled as specialties like genomics gain ascendance in biology, Dr. Cameron said. ?But this may be a case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater,? she said. ?We need taxonomy to understand what?s happening in the biological world.?

In the case of agriculture, poor productivity of a particular crop could be caused by the disappearance of a single, very efficient pollinator. Without data at the species level, this crucial fact might be overlooked.

Mr. Droege, who is among a handful of expert bee taxonomists, is using the findings from the article in Conservation Biology to build a national monitoring network that he hopes will include a partnership with Canada. He will probably be the project?s sole identifier of specimens.

But even with the development of a network, there is no central repository, federal or private, for the data. Dr. LeBuhn directs The Great Sunflower Project, a citizen-science program with 100,000 volunteers reporting daily pollinator observations. She is not sure what to do with the vast and growing collection of information.

?I?m sitting on an amazing data set,? she said. ?If I got hit bya car tomorrow, somebody would probably do something with it, but it?s not feeding into anything like the U.S.D.A.?

To underline the importance of systematic monitoring, Dr. LeBuhn recounted how a former student, Quinn McFrederick, surveyed bumblebees in San Francisco?s urban parks in 2004 and discovered that a bee species that had been one of the city?s most common ones in the 1990s had disappeared entirely.

?Wow, I thought. The most common bumblebee in San Francisco disappeared, and none of us noticed, not even me, a biologist,? Dr. LeBuhn said. ?That really got my attention.?

Facebook Offers Free Calls on iPhones

No, Facebook didn?t announce a phone or its big mobile plans on Tuesday, but it does have a little something phone-related to share today. As first reported by The Verge, Facebook is rolling out a free calling feature in its Messenger app for the iPhone. The feature, which was released in Canada a few weeks ago, lets iPhone users make free calls to other iPhone users who are using the Messenger app.?You can?t call landline or cellphone numbers.

The update will begin rolling out today in the Messenger app. In the app, select a friend, then the ?i? icon in the upper right hand corner, and you will then see a ?Free Call? option. Facebook confirmed to ABC News that users will not have to update the app for this feature; it will automatically appear for those who already have the app. As with Skype or other mobile VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services, you can make the calls over Wi-Fi or a 3G, 4G or LTE connection. Wi-Fi is the cheaper option; if you are on a cellular network it will eat at your data plan.

MORE: A Facebook Phone? Social Network Testing Voice Features

This is just one of many mobile announcements Facebook has made in the past few months. It upgraded both its iPhone and?Android apps?to make them faster and it?released is new Poke app, which destroys messages 10 seconds or less after you look at them.

Of course, Facebook has long been rumored to be building a phone of its own, but as we said a few weeks ago, ?it looks like the social network is already transforming our phones into Facebook phones ? or building its own right in front of our faces.

On Tuesday at a big event at its headquarters, Facebook announced its new Graph Search feature, which turns the personal information people have shared on the social network into a powerful searchable database. While it is only rolling out on a limited basis in the U.S. right now, ultimately it will allow everyone to search easily across the network and their friends? information.

Facebook didn?t make a big announcement about the voice calling service, but it?s a very big move for the social networking company. While Facebook declined to comment on whether Messenger app calling would come to Android or the Web, or if it might charge for the service, it is a step into voice calling for the company and a further step into mobile products.

30 percent of teen girls meet online 'friends' offline, study finds

CandyBox Images/Shutterstock

An increase in mobile devices and social networking means that teens are more plugged-in than ever before.

By Tia Ghose, LiveScience

Nearly a third of teenage girls have met people offline after becoming online friends, according to a new study. In many cases the identity of that online character was not fully confirmed before the teens set up a real-life meet-up.

In addition, one in 10 experienced some form of exploitation ? ranging from creepy sexual advances to rape ? during that offline interaction.

The study, published today (Jan. 14) in the journal Pediatrics, looked at teenage girls, half of whom had been abused in some way in real life. Those who faced abuse or neglect were likelier to exhibit "high risk" online behavior, such as having racy social media profiles or accepting online sexual advances. Risky online behavior, in turn, was tied to meeting Internet "friends" offline.

But because the study included a large number of at-risk youth, some experts doubt those numbers apply to the general population.

Teenagers may first meet a friend-of-a-friend online and meet face-to-face later, but complete strangers are a different story, said Parry Aftab, an Internet privacy lawyer who runs WiredSafety.org. [ Adolescent Angst: 10 Facts About the Teen Brain ]

"Straight strangers? No way. I just don't see that as happening. The kids have gotten very sophisticated about this issue," Aftab said.

Janis Wolak, a senior researcher at the Crimes against Children Research Center, agrees. In general population surveys, Wolak has found that very few teens meet online strangers in person. And from that subset, so few are sexually assaulted that scientists can't draw meaningful statistics, she said.

Mostly harmless
Since the days of AOL chat rooms, parents have worried about predators luring teens into dangerous offline meetings.

Though it can happen, the rise of the Internet has coincided with a steep drop in child sexual abuse, suggesting that online exploitation isn't a huge problem, Wolak told LiveScience.

Still, survivors of abuse can have trouble setting boundaries or detecting predatory or inappropriate behavior, Wolak said. That could spill over into online interactions, she said.

Vulnerable teens
Jennie Noll, a psychology professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, had been studying abused teens when she began noticing their online profiles were markedly different.

"They would, more often than some other kids, post racy photos of themselves or sexual utterances," Noll told LiveScience.

To test that observation, she and her colleagues studied 130 girls ages 14 to 17 who had seen Child Protective Services for sexual and physical abuse and neglect, as well as 125 demographically similar teenagers with no abuse history. The girls answered questions about online behavior. A year later, Noll asked how many of the girls had met an Internet friend offline.

Thirty percent of girls (both abused and not) reported an in-person encounter with someone they first met online. About 10 percent of the girls experienced something negative ? often creepy sexual overtures or intimidation during that meet-up. Only one prosecuted rape occurred as a result of the offline meetings, Noll said.

Consistent with her anecdotal experience, abused teens were likelier than non-abused teens to have racy social media profiles or report fielding sexual advances from strangers ? behaviors that were separately tied to meeting strangers offline.

Mitigating risk
While the findings are disturbing, the team also found that high-quality parental relationships and open communication could reduce the risk that teens would meet online friends in the real world. Past research has found parents are in the dark about what their teenagers are doing online, with 70 percent of teens hiding some of their online behavior from parents, including accessing porn or violent content online and pirating music or movies online.

In the new research, the scientists found that Internet blocking software didn't affect real-life risky behavior.

Still, it's important for parents not to worry too much about online predators, as the most likely abusers are relatives, family friends, or acquaintances of children known in real life, Wolak said.

New machines, competitions highlight year for computer science ...

Members of the Assocation of Computing Machinery work on the framing for a "touch table" computer interface.

Members of the Assocation of Computing Machinery work on the framing for a ?touch table? computer interface.

Student organizations in the Computer Science Department and Information Technology Program have much to look forward to in 2013. From large-scale projects to competitions and increased membership, undergraduate and graduate students in the department are on the move.

Association of Computing Machinery

ACM has built a tabletop touchscreen that will interface with a Windows operating system. The ?touch table,? as club members are calling it, has the potential to be used as a campus-wide information center. Touch gestures are registered in the computer using infrared technology from a projection onto a custom-made acrylic and gel screen.

The club is also in the beginning stages of a potential artificial intelligence (AI) competition that club members hope to host sometime next year.

Officers for 2012-2013: Matthew England, president; Ryan Donnelly, vice president; Brendan Long, treasurer; Georgi Angelov, secretary; Chris Shafer, projects planner.

Computer Science Graduate Student Council

In October, the Computer Science Graduate Student hosted a programming competition, sponsored by Carfax. Teams of CS/IT students participated. Programming language questions focused on C or JAVA.

The winning team received a $400 Visa gift card. The second and third place teams received $250 and $100 gift cards, respectively. All three teams received internship opportunities with Carfax.

In addition to the competition, CSGSC has held poster competitions and hosted featured speakers.

Officers for 2012-2013: Tiancheng Zhuang, president; Avimanyou Vasta, vice president; Renzhi Cao, treasurer; Rahul Singh, public relations; Andrew Wilson, web administrator.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon

With new leadership starting in January, the Mizzou chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon has much in store to give current and potential members a lively experience as part of the organization.

Incoming president Jeff Cook said the organization has a reformed system of tutoring sessions ? called ?co-curricular tutoring? ? in store for students. It will be regularly scheduled and on pace with various Computer Science Department classes.

The organization?s leaders are also looking at ways to get members involved philanthropically, by focusing on volunteer efforts that will utilize members? expertise. Additionally, the group will host more social events, such as LAN parties and intra-departmental competitions.

Officers for 2013: Jeff Cook, president; Charles Willis, vice president; Michael Rowden, treasurer; Tyler Morton, secretary; Michael Brush, historian.

Ever since ConocoPhillips spun off its refining and marketing business last year as Phillips 66, it has been shedding non-core oil and gas assets to raise cash and to help it sharpen its strategic focus.

In the latest deal, ConocoPhillips has announced that it will sell some of its older oilfields in Montana and North Dakota to Denbury Resources for $1.05 billion. The sale of about 86,000 acres in the Cedar Creek Anticline is the latest in ConocoPhillips? divestiture program that has raised more than $12 billion in the last year.

The deal does not include any of ConocoPhillips? assets in the lucrative Bakken shale oil formation in those states. The transaction advances the company?s strategy to focus resources on the Bakken play by freeing up cash to allow it to accelerate the development of the significant Bakken unconventional position it has built up?in North Dakota and Montana. ConocoPhillips owns 626,000 net acres in the Bakken, consisting of 207,000 net lease acres and 419,000 net mineral acres.

ConocoPhillips anticipates a $120 million earnings benefit in its fourth quarter related to the Cedar Creek Anticline transaction, which is expected to close in the next?10 weeks.

(AP) ? Winds up to 50 mph added to California's big chill misery on Monday as farmers struggle to save their citrus crops from sub-freezing temperatures and residents bundle up in record cold.

Downtown Los Angeles dipped to 35 degrees just before 4 a.m. Monday, breaking the previous record of 36 degrees set on Jan. 14, 2007.

Elsewhere Monday, it was 13 degrees in high desert Lancaster at 6 a.m., 25 degrees in Fresno, 27 in Temecula, 33 in Redondo Beach and Sacramento, 36 in Van Nuys and Palm Springs and 40 in San Francisco.

In Angeles National Forest, where overnight temperatures have been dropping into the 20s, Arcadia hiker Danny Kim, 28, was found Sunday night after surviving 26 hours in the frigid West Fork wilderness. Kim was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Santa Ana winds have now joined the weeklong cold siege, raking the usual areas below mountain passes, including Fontana, the San Fernando Valley, Riverside, Chino Hills and the Oxnard Plain in Ventura County.

The winds helped to keep most Southern California crops out of danger.

But temperatures dipping into the 20s threatened mandarin oranges in the San Joaquin Valley. Mandarins can only withstand 32 degree temperatures.

Growers have been running irrigation water and turned on wind machines to ward off the cold.

"It's the coldest so far. We're expecting a little damage," said Alyssa Houtdy of Exeter-based California Citrus Mutual, an association of the state's 3,900 citrus growers.

Farmers were still being contacted for assessments.

"We came out better than what we expected," Delano grower Doug Carman told the Fresno Bee (http://bit.ly/TVduLi ). Carman's Paramount Citrus farms about 30,000 acres of clementine mandarins, navel and Valencia oranges, lemons and other citrus varieties

In Beverly Hills, fans brought heavy coats and scarves as they waited along the red carpet hoping to catch glimpses of stars arriving for the Golden Globes ceremony Sunday evening. Some of the actors shivered but weren't complaining.

"I'd rather be nippy than boiling hot," said actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who arrived in a strapless dress. "No, I'm not wearing any leggings or long underwear."

In San Diego, zookeepers offered extra heat and shelter for some animals.

The cold air was flowing east into neighboring Arizona, where metropolitan Phoenix was marking one of its coldest stretches in year. Temperatures over the weekend dipped to 30 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. They fell well below zero in mountainous Flagstaff.
