HBT: Cubs unload Soto, Johnson and Maholm in trades

The Cubs started the unloading process Monday night, shipping left-hander Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson to the Braves right-handers Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizcaino?and catcher Geovany Soto to Texas for right-hander Jacob Brigham.

Maholm satisfies the Braves? need for a starter after the team originally tried trading for fellow Cub Ryan Dempster. Maholm has been on an incredible roll of late, going 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA since June 29. He can also be kept for 2013 at a modest $6.5 million under the terms of a team option on his contract.

Johnson should prove to be a nice upgrade over the currently injured Matt Diaz as an occasional starter against left-handers. He was hitting .307/.361/.452 in 166 at-bats this season, including a .333/.379/.543 line in 81 at-bats versus southpaws. He?s a free agent at season?s end.

MLB.com?s Carrie Muskat reports that top outfield prospect Brett Jackson has been?pulled from the game for Triple-A Iowa, suggesting that he?ll be promoted to replace Johnson on the roster. The strikeout-prone Jackson was hitting .255/.337/.482 for Iowa.

ESPN?s Jerry Crasnick reported the names in the Maholm deal. Chapman, 25, is a potential setup man or maybe a closer with his big fastball. He has a 3.52 ERA and a 60/29 K/BB ratio in 53 2/3 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Expect to see him get his first look in the majors soon.

Vizcaino?s inclusion in the deal is a surprise, considering that the 21-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery this spring. The Braves moved him to the pen last year, and he was pretty impressive while posting a 4.67 ERA in 17 appearances after a late-season callup. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs move him back to the rotation or leave him in the pen next spring. He certainly has big-time upside in either role, and the Cubs can afford to be patient if they decide to let him start.

According to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports, Soto was traded for?Brigham, a 24-year-old who has gone 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA and a 116/46 K/BB ratio in 124 innings for Double-A Frisco this season. The 2006 sixth-round pick is an unlikely major leaguer, but perhaps the Cubs see something they think they can turn into a middle reliever. They weren?t planning to bring Soto back in 2013 anyway.

Soto will back up Mike Napoli in Texas after Yorvit Torrealba was designated for assignment and will likely get some starts against left-handers behind the plate when Napoli starts at first base or DH. Torrealba figures to be traded. Since Soto is making $4.3 million this year and is probably due a modest raise this winter despite his poor .195/.278/.345 line this year, he?s a strong candidate to be non-tendered.

WASHINGTON (July 30, 2012) -- A rat may never be man's best friend, but the Rugged Automated Training System (R.A.T.S.) research sponsored by scientists with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, in collaboration with engineers at West Point and the Counter Explosives Hazards Center, will determine if and how these animals can be trained to save Soldiers' lives.

In July, Barron Associates Inc., Charlottesville, Va. was selected for an award under the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program to develop and test a rugged, automated and low-cost system for training rats to detect improvised explosive devices and mines, said Dr. Micheline Strand, chief of the Army Research Office's Life Sciences Division, which manages the program.

"The automated system we're developing is designed to inexpensively train rats to detect buried explosives to solve an immediate Army need for safer and lower-cost mine removal," says William Gressick, senior research engineer and the project's principal investigator at Barron Associates. "Beyond this application, the system will facilitate the use of rats in other search tasks such as homeland security and search-and-rescue operations. In the long-term, the system is likely to benefit both official and humanitarian organizations."

Strand said, "If we can demonstrate that rats can be trained inexpensively to be reliable detectors, then this method would not only lower costs for the Army but would also create new opportunities for using animals to detect anything from mines to humans buried in earthquake rubble."

It is well established that animals are capable of identifying explosives at lower concentrations than abiotic systems. The Department of Defense currently relies on dogs as the animal of choice for explosives detection. The goal of this STTR program is not to replace the use of dogs, but to expand the Army's detection capabilities.

"Training dogs is very expensive. If we can significantly reduce the cost of a trained animal, then we could provide more animals to protect soldiers." Strand said.

Trained rats would also create new opportunities; rats can search smaller spaces than a dog can, and are easier to transport.

Landmines kill between 15,000 and 20,000 people a year, and continue to kill adults and children decades after a conflict ends. An automated system to train rats to find mines could accelerate worldwide efforts to clear mined areas and return mined land to farming or other productive uses.

Shellie Zimmerman to skip arraignment after not guilty plea

Shellie Zimmerman, wife of George Zimmerman, the man accused of shooting Trayvon Martin, is seen in a police mug shot June 12, 2012 in Sanford, Fla.

By NBC News staff

Shellie Zimmerman will not appear at her scheduled arraignment Tuesday after pleading not guilty to perjury for allegedly lying about the family's finances, a court official told WPTV.com.

Shellie, the wife of George Zimmerman, was arrested June 12 on one count of perjury.

"Neither Ms. Zimmerman or her attorney are required to attend the arraignment," Seminole County, Fla., court spokeswoman Michelle Kennedy told WPTV. "Ms. Zimmerman's name will remain on the docket, but her case will not be called."

Shellie Zimmerman's lawyer, Kelly Sims, entered a written not guilty plea last week, along with a waiver for her client not to personally attend her arraignment.

George Zimmerman, 28, was charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting of Trayvon Martin. He pleaded not guilty, and claims that he acted in self-defense.

His $150,000 bond was revoked after it was alleged that he and Shellie Zimmerman misled the court about their finances, neglecting to disclose they had raised at least $135,000 in a PayPal account.

Florida prosecutors said George Zimmerman, speaking by phone from jail, gave detailed instructions to his wife to conduct a series of money transfers and transactions in allegedly coded exchanges that were intended to hide from the court how much money had been raised to help pay for his legal defense.

Zimmerman spoke to wife in code from jail to hide assets, prosecutors allege

Prosecutors released six recorded calls Zimmerman made from April 12 through April 17 while he was in Seminole County Jail. In the calls,?he gave his wife Shellie detailed instructions to change passwords and answer security questions for the accounts, allowing her to move money.?He then instructed her to move the money in a series of transactions carried out over days.

At George Zimmerman's April 20 bond hearing, when asked whether the couple had financial means to assist in his defense, Shellie Zimmerman said: "Uhm, not -- not that I'm aware of," according to an affidavit.

?Today?s Supernatural,? first single from Animal Collective?s upcoming album Centipede Hz.

It definitely embodies a more earth, psychedelic feel than anything on Merriweather Post Pavilion , but I can?t yet tell if I like it? I?m sure it will grow on me, most of Animal Collective is an acquired taste. That said, the first time I heard Feels, I was brought down upon my knees with disbelief that something could be so delightful and deep.

Tips to look for free audio clips
(Don't use those tips to download illegally. To buy music is always the best way to support your idols)

Use Google, Yahoo and MSN to find some auido clip sites. Sometimes search engines can direct you to right sites. Now that a lot of auido clip sites are banned by search engines, remember to make good use of exchange links in those sites.
Use auido clip search engines outside the United Stats. I used to use Chinese sites such as Baidu, Sogou, Yahoo China to search audio clips. Your browser maybe ask you to install simplified Chinese character, just ingore it. I always can find tons of English audio clips in those music search engines.
Use P2P software. It works well for full album audio clips specially. In fact, you almost can find everything with P2P software.
Visit artist's offical website. Some artists' sites provide mp3 files for fans to download.

The Family Emerging Model - Parenting Skills Worksheets

Monday, July 16, 2012

Interview by Lon Woodbury

David Brinkman, Founder and Director of Brinkman House, spoke to Lon Woodbury from strugglingteens.com on L.A. Talk Radio about a relatively new treatment option for at-risk teens called the Family Emerging Model.

David and Melinda, his wife, have actually worked with a variety of boys between the ages of 13 to 17 years old for practically a decade now. Prior to inviting troubled adolescents in to his house, David worked in a broad range of jobs related to therapy and learning. His work has varied from leading direct treatment programs for various schools to serving as a board member for numerous organizations, including serving on the state board of governors for the Head Start Course and working as chairman for the Boundary County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. He has attended North Idaho College as well as the University of Idaho, majoring in Psychology and getting a minor in History.

David talked about precisely how a home-based treatment model assists in developing a life-changing relationship with struggling teen boys. He detailed exactly how this informal structure, a home atmosphere living with a normal family and regular sessions of outsourced psychotherapy, was sometimes just the right solution to turn boys into men. While this treatment model of a residence away from home was established to supplement rather than compete against therapeutic boarding schools, it did offer special opportunities for personal growth and maturation not possible in more traditional therapeutic programs for at-risk teenagers.

Today, David and his wife, together with their own two young children, Liliana and Logan, help young men reintegrate into family life and participate in a community. While David plays a mentorship role in the lives of young men, he also arranges therapy for the boys with licensed psychotherapists. As a mentor, the line between work and play can sometimes become blurred because work may also involve snowboarding, cycling, and playing basketball with the young men who have become part of his family unit.

Brinkman House, in the northern panhandle region of Idaho, is only 25 miles south of Canada. It gives kids the option to experience a small town with caring townsfolk, access to regional schooling and enjoy recreational facilities. The picturesque region surrounded by the Purcell, Cabinet and Selkirk Mountains also offers the opportunity to bike, walk, fish, camp, canoe and raft.

The program only hosts four students at a time and the length of stay can vary from a school semester to a year. It is built on the idea that a structured, family-like relationship in a home environment can help young men relate better to their own homes and families and reintegrate back into society in a mature way, which includes doing volunteer work and making a contribution to the world.

Twiplomacy

Agencies and Bernama July 30, 2012 12:53 pm

According to the Scotsman, the survey by US-based PR firm Burson-Marsteller looking at the rise of "Twiplomacy", Obama was the first major politician to fully harness social media, in his 2007 campaign.

His Twitter account @BarackObama sent the most popular tweet of any world leader on May 9. The account is ranked fifth in the Twitterverse for followers, just behind @britneyspears, according to the study.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez - @chavezcandanga, is the second most popular leader on Twitter, and 38 percent of his tweets are replies.

Among world leaders on Twitter, David Cameron came fifth with more than two million followers. However, while Obama was top in terms of number of followers, only 1 percent of tweets from his account are replies, putting him well down the rankings in terms of engaging with his followers. This compares with Rwandan President @PaulKagame, who has just under 71,000 followers, but whose tweets are more than 90 percent replies. Like many government accounts, his team sent the vast majority of Obama?s messages. Only eight of the almost 5,000 tweets sent from the @BarackObama account were personally signed off with his initials "-BO", including a Valentine?s Day message to his wife. The study also found that politicians frequently discover Twitter during election campaigns, but once elected the accounts fall silent.

Meanwhile Malaysia?s Prime Minister Najib Razak has been listed as number two in Asia and number 17 in the world out of the 254 head of governments and state and institutions. He also ranked the sixth most popular world leader who "tweets properly" -- coming in at number 30 out of 254 head of states and government that actually do their own tweeting. Najib started to tweet on Sept 23, 2008 and as of today he has 767,679 followers on Twitter with 2,675 tweets and 81 following. This makes him by far the most popular national leader in Asia on Twitter, per capita (1 in 37) and comfortably in the global top ten. According to the report, Najib is also following a number of international and regional leaders and is mutually connected with @bluehousekorea, @karimmassimov_e and @number10gov.

PFT: Rivers wanted Manning with Broncos

1966 Topps - 004 - Gino Cappelletti

After a 45-year career as a player, an assistant coach and a broadcaster, Gino Cappelletti retired from the Patriots Friday.

As a kicker and wide receiver in the AFL days of the Boston Patriots (playing in every game of their existence), he won a league MVP honor in 1964, and holds the league?s all-time records for points scored (1,100) and field goals (170).

After a seven-year stint in the broadcast booth, he spent three years as special teams coach (1979-81) before returning to his duties as color commentator in 1988.

?It was an instinct that sometimes is so personal that you know that it might be the time to make a decision like this,? Cappelletti told the Boston Herald. ?It?s been 33 long years with the Patriots ? not that they weren?t exciting and good years ? but the length of time certainly has been part of that. Of course, I?ve got to believe that this was the time to do it, and I had a great experience with all of it. I look forward to many fond memories because of what we saw with the Patriots throughout the years with how they?ve improved in almost every category.

?They?re one of the elite teams in the National Football League at this point, and I?m just proud and honored to have been part of it.?

He was a huge part of their history, and was hailed as ?one of the most iconic figures in franchise history,? by Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

?Going back to his days as one of the all-time great players, Gino has been such a fixture, so it is hard imagining not working with him on a regular basis,? Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. ?I have been fortunate to enjoy Gino?s presence and share experiences that extend well beyond the game. Around the team, he wasn?t just a broadcaster but was ? and remains ? truly part of the team, respected by players and coaches for representing everything good about sports.

?Gino is a class act, one of the true gentlemen of the AFL and NFL and I am proud to have been associated with him every week of my career as Patriots head coach.?

Cappelletti said his favorite moment as a broadcaster was the Patriots??Snow Bowl? (or ?Tuck Rule?) win over the Raiders in the 2001 playoffs, the game that sparked the most successful run in franchise history.

?The fact that they came from obscurity to win the game, it looked like the game was going to be over really in Oakland?s favor,? Cappelletti said. ?Of course, the Tuck Rule thing helped, but it was the field goals that were made by Adam Vinatieri. Being a field-goal kicker myself, I lived it through him, and he was able to come through in such magnificent fashion under those conditions, that was just a tremendous kick, a tremendous field goal, and then to win it in overtime.

?What that game did, it catapulted the Patriots? players into starting to believe that they could be competitive in the playoffs because they had not had that much success in the previous times that they were in the playoffs. That game was so big for the organization that I just have to say that it?s the game that comes to mind when you ask me that question.?

Of course, Cappelletti himself?s a significant part of that organization, which makes Friday a poignant day for Patriots fans.

Google's 2Q earnings rise 11 pct, ad prices fall

Google's second-quarter earnings rose 11 percent despite a deepening decline in the prices paid for its Internet search advertising.

The results announced Thursday included Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of cellphone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for the first time. Google Inc. owned Motorola for the final 39 days of the quarter ending in June.

Google Inc. earned $2.8 billion, or $8.42 per share, during the three months ending in June. That compared with net income of $2.5 billion, or $7.68 per share, last year.

The earnings would have been $10.12 per share, if not for Google's accounting costs for employee stock compensation and the Motorola deal.

Revenue climbed 35 percent from last year to $12.2 billion. If not for Motorola, revenue would have increased by 21 percent.

Parents: Neighborhood watch death not God's plan

(AP) ? The parents of the unarmed teen who was shot and killed by a Florida neighborhood watch volunteer rejected the shooter's claim that the death was a part of God's plan.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity televised Wednesday, George Zimmerman said he felt the course of the night 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed "was all God's plan."

"We must worship a different God," Martin's father, Tracy Martin, told The Associated Press. "There is no way that my God wanted George Zimmerman to murder my teenage son."

Speaking Thursday on NBC's "Today" show, the teen's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said the notion was "ridiculous."

In the Fox News interview, Zimmerman also said he'd like to talk with Trayvon Martin's parents about what happened.

"Absolutely not," Fulton said when asked on NBC if she'd be willing to meet with Zimmerman.

The Fox News interview was Zimmerman's first lengthy television interview and was conducted at an undisclosed location in Seminole County, Fla., where Zimmerman must remain under conditions of his release on bail.

Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting in Sanford, about 20 miles north of Orlando. Martin is black and Zimmerman has a white father and Hispanic mother. The shooting prompted nationwide protests after Zimmerman was not arrested for weeks after the shooting.

Zimmerman claims Martin attacked him and has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense under Florida's "stand your ground" law. Zimmerman is free on $1 million bail.

In his interview, Zimmerman said he would like to tell Martin's parents he was sorry about the teen's death.

"I can't imagine what it must feel like. And I pray for them daily," Zimmerman said. Later, he added: "I am sorry that this happened."

But Fulton said it is hard for her to accept his apology because he still says he does not regret anything he did on the night of the shooting.

When asked in the Fox News interview to explain what he meant when he told a police dispatcher he was following Martin, Zimmerman said he was trying to keep an eye on Martin to tell police. He said he was not following Martin but attempting to get a more precise address for the authorities.

Whether Zimmerman was the aggressor plays a major role in his self-defense claim.

"I hadn't given them a correct address. I was going to give them the actual address," he said. "I meant that I was going in the same direction as him. I didn't mean that I was actually pursuing him."

Zimmerman said shortly after he got out of his car, Martin was right next to him. Zimmerman said he looked down to try to find his cellphone and when he looked up, Martin punched him and broke his nose. Then, he said, Martin straddled him and started slamming his head down.

"He started bashing my head into the concrete sidewalk. I was disoriented," Zimmerman said, adding that it was at that point he began to fear for his life ? another key element in his self-defense claim.

He said as the two were struggling, Martin said "you're going to die tonight." Zimmerman said he yelled out multiple times ? shouts captured on 911 calls by local residents ? in hopes the authorities would locate them.

"I was yelling in hopes that they were in the vicinity and they would come and find me," he said. "As soon as he broke my nose, I started yelling for help."

Martin's parents have said they believe it was their son who was yelling for help.

Zimmerman also said racial profiling had nothing to do with the confrontation.

"I'm not a racist and I'm not a murderer," he said.

British, Pakistani PMs to meet Afghan president

By DAVID STRINGER
Associated Press

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai on Thursday was to discuss cross-border attacks and Taliban peace talks with the prime ministers of Britain and Pakistan.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Britain's David Cameron planned to discuss how to stop fighters from spilling across the Afghan-Pakistan border, and how to advance a peace deal to end Afghanistan's insurgency.

The British leader planned to urge Karzai and Ashraf to "work together to achieve a secure and stable Afghanistan," his spokeswoman said, on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Ashraf, who took office last month, and Karzai were also holding separate talks together.

Ahead of the visit, Ashraf's spokesman said Pakistan supports peace talks with the Afghan Taliban, but the outcome should not adversely affect the country.

Pakistan is seen as key to the reconciliation process because of its historical ties with the Taliban.

The militant group has refused peace talks with Karzai, calling him a puppet of the United States. Instead, they have held talks directly with American officials. They broke off talks earlier this year, saying the U.S. reneged on a promise to release Afghan prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. The talks have so far shown no signs of restarting.

Ashraf spokesman Akram Shaheedi said the prime minister also plans to push the Afghan government to stop militants from its country from infiltrating Pakistan.

The British, U.S. and Afghan governments have long criticized Pakistan for not doing enough to stop cross-border attacks.

The Kabul talks marked the end of Cameron's two-day visit to Afghanistan, intended to guide decisions on how fast Britain will withdraw its 9,500 troops before international forces leave by the end of 2014.

In separate talks with Karzai, Cameron intended to discuss the drawdown. He also planned to stress the need for "credible, inclusive and nationwide" presidential elections in 2014, his spokeswoman said, on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Cameron also planned to raise concerns about the deaths of 26 foreign troops so far this year in so called "green-on-blue" killings involving Afghan security officials attacking NATO's US-led International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF.

Such attacks have fueled distrust between U.S. and other foreign troops and their Afghan partners.

Three British soldiers were killed July 1 by an Afghan policeman as they attended a meeting of local officials.

Cameron also met in Kabul with the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, who gave him a positive message on the country's overall security picture as they discussed recent violence in northeastern Afghanistan.

Allen said the process of handing security duties to local forces was progressing well, though the Afghan army still needs to improve its command and control capabilities, Cameron's spokeswoman said.

Cameron also discussed the issue of "green-on-blue" killings on Wednesday in Helmand, southern Afghanistan, where British forces are mainly based.

"Clearly people are seized of the risks and there is quite a lot of work going on over this," Cameron's spokeswoman said.

Malcolm Chalmers of London's military think tank, the Royal United Services Institute, said the issue is important because the international pullout requires foreign forces to train their Afghan counterparts to handle security duties for themselves.

"It is already a concern and reflects the changing nature of the role of our forces - British, American, and other ISAF nations," he said.

"They will be increasingly involved in training and mentoring Afghan forces, and to do that requires them to be in very close contact, which means it is very difficult to defend themselves," he added.

British lawmakers are concerned that the killings could sap the public's already fragile appetite for the war.

Cameron and Karzai on Thursday signed an agreement for 90 British military officials to staff an Afghan army officer training academy to be opened near Kabul. A total of 30 Danish, Australian and New Zealand soldiers also will staff the center, due to open before international forces leave at the end of 2014.

Christina Pesoli: The Parent Trap - Huffington Post

Emily and William have done everything right. They have been married for 15 years. They have three beautiful kids. They both work -- he's an analyst, and she's an attorney for a nonprofit organization. His job pays better than hers, but hers provides a lot of flexibility, which is critical, since William's job requires a lot of travel. They are not rich, and they do not live beyond their means. In many ways, they are the model American family.

But there's one big problem: Emily is exhausted. I don't mean she's tuckered out and needs to catch up on some sleep -- although some sleep would definitely help; I mean she's running on fumes, living day-to-day and not sure how much longer she can take it.

Because William travels a lot, Emily is left to juggle her job as well as the three kids' school and extracurricular schedules. She has to worry about trying to keep on top of the housework, making sure everyone's getting three square meals a day, bird-dogging homework, baths and bedtimes.

Meanwhile, Emily's doctor has told her that she has high blood pressure and has ordered her to make some lifestyle changes. Carrying out these orders requires commodities that are in short supply at Emily's house: Time, for sure. And extra money for a gym membership and a house cleaner. And as long as we're making a wish list, a magic wand wouldn't hurt.

William has complaints of his own. He would much rather be at home than holed up in a hotel, working long hours and eating bad takeout several nights a week. While his complaints are legitimate, it's difficult for Emily to feel very sympathetic these days. Getting a job that doesn't require him to travel sounds like a logical solution, but jobs in William's field are hard to come by.

Emily's predicament made me realized how easy I have it. Sure, things get hectic for me sometimes -- like for the entire month of December, for example. There's my daughter's birthday, Christmas and the year-end demands of my job. Because I'm not married, getting it all done ultimately falls to me.

But I still have it much easier than Emily. Why? Because I am divorced. And along with my divorce, I got a custody schedule. At first, I viewed this schedule as a penalty, because it required me to forfeit days with my daughter. But over the years I've come to see it as a consolation prize because it provides me with something I never had when I was married: regularly scheduled blocks of time to myself.

When Hannah is with me, I can cook dinner from scratch. I can put off laundry and other chores and read to her every night. I can blow off running errands that I know she hates. And I rarely get a sitter, because I don't make social plans that don't include her.

Then, when she's with her dad, I get to plan (and even take!) trips with my boyfriend. I get to have dinner with girlfriends. I have uninterrupted personal phone calls. I can stay up late and sleep in on weekends. I can run a marathon of errands or do mountains of laundry without worrying that I'm torturing or ignoring my daughter.

I realize that the success of my situation depends on a couple of big assumptions. First, it depends on my having an ex-spouse that is not a deadbeat dad, and by that I mean one that pays child support and regularly and responsibly exercises his visitation. Second, it assumes that I have the discipline to manage my social life in a way that puts my daughter's needs before my own whims. I don't get to do whatever I want whenever I want, but I do have chunks of time to myself to spend as I wish.

I am not bragging about my situation. But the reality is that more than one study in the past few years has found that having kids can actually hurt your marriage. There is a big flaw in the system when it's easier to be a good parent and a good partner when you're not married to the father or mother of your kids. If we're serious about our commitment to the continued viability of traditional marriage, we need to find ways to support those who are engaged in it. (And yes, both of the puns in that last sentence were intended.)

So, what can we do? The solution is twofold. Husbands and wives need to facilitate windows of time when the other one can have some time away. Whether it's a night out with friends every other week or season tickets to football games, breaks like these are important to the health of the marriage. And it should go without saying that it doesn't count as a break if the parent staying at home with the kids gives the other one grief about exercising this hall pass. Husbands and wives need to encourage these breaks, not harass each other over them.

Second, couples need blocks of time together without the kids around. Date nights are a good start, but they're not enough. Couples need entire weekends to spend together on a regular basis -- even if they don't leave town. Maybe you have friends you can trade off with watching each other's kids one weekend a month. Or perhaps you're lucky enough to have parents close by who are willing to take the grandkids for the weekend on a regular basis. Or you can bite the bullet and spring for a sitter if you can afford it.

Weekends without the kids can do wonders for a relationship because they provide ample time to do things separately as well as together. Plowing through email, watching a game on TV, catching up on projects around the house, going to dinner and a movie together and sleeping in. Weekends like this probably resemble the way you spent time before the kids came along.
Weekends like this probably helped convince you to marry each other and have kids together in the first place.

Taking a marriage-preparation class before walking down the aisle is standard operating procedure these days. Parenting preparation class should be, too. And I'm not talking about a class that helps you know how to set boundaries for your kids -- I'm talking about one that helps you set boundaries to protect your relationship.

Before having children together, couples should work out a plan both for having time away from their spouse and kids as well as having time alone with their spouse without the kids around. Having such a plan before the kids come along can help keep the relationship healthy rather than scrambling to give your marriage CPR after it has been damaged by neglect or built-up resentments.

From venue to menu and a million details in between, couples work hard to ensure that the wedding will be meaningful and memorable. If couples put as much thought and effort into managing their marriage as they do planning their wedding, it's hard to imagine that it wouldn't pay off.

If you're currently married and all of this sounds like so much work that you're not sure it's worth the effort, think again. Balancing your parenting obligations against other demands of your personal life might be easier when you're a single parent, but managing your relationship with your child's other parent is a whole different story.

Cardboard Gardeners in Bel Air, Real Estate Gets Deals Website ...

Monday, July 16, 2012, by Adrian Glick Kudler

BEL AIR: A reader spotted this hardworking cardboard cutouts near Sunset and Beverly Glen last week--these are the work of West Hollywood-based Ramiro Gomez, who "For the last eight months ... has made the invisible visible by installing life-size cardboard cutouts of nannies, gardeners, valet workers and housekeepers in Beverly Hills, the Hollywood Hills and other wealthy areas." The LA Times wrote about the project last month. [Curbed Inbox]

THE INTERNET: Movoto has launched "the world's first daily deal website for homes." SpotProperty is free and "scours property data and housing trends from over one million for-sale properties in 50 metro areas throughout the US in order to identify the best deals in each local market. Each day, potential homebuyers receive a message with a recently listed property that fits their desired search criteria and is selling below market value." NB: the site will sometimes send short sales or foreclosures, but they'll typically be "priced at 10-20% below the current market value." Beware of bidding wars! [Curbed Inbox]
