According to the Mayo Clinic, eating a low fat diet may drastically lower your prostate cancer risk. Some ways to do this are as follows:
- Eat more fruits and vegetables (specifically try to get more fat from plants than from animals).
- Fish are full of many of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids that are not only good for your heart, but are also believed to help prevent prostate cancer.
- Try reducing your intake of dairy products, as studies have shown that people who eat the most dairy products also have the highest rates of prostate cancer.
- Another healthy choice would be green tea, which has many antioxidants. Studies have shown that it is effective in preventing prostate cancer.
- Try to limit yourself to one or two drinks a day. Some evidence suggests that men who drink several alcoholic beverages a day have increased prostate cancer rates than men who drink only one or two drinks a day on average.
Another way to lower your chances of developing prostate cancer is to maintain a healthy weight (a BMI between 18.5 and 25). A BMI of over 30 (which is classified as obese) has been shown to be a major risk factor for prostate cancer.
In addition to this, men who exercise regularly have been shown to have a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. Naturally, this goes along very well with eating a healthy diet and having a healthy body weight.
Finally, another thing you can do to prevent prostate cancer is to schedule regular checkups with your doctor. It?s true for any kind of cancer that if you catch it early, it very treatable.
