Dismal job market pushes Dow into 275-point plunge

The stock market suffered its worst day of the year Friday after a surprisingly weak report about hiring and employment cast a pall of gloom over the U.S. economy. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 275 points.

Traders stampeded into the safety of bonds, pushing the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note to a record low. Fearful investors bought gold, causing the price to spike nearly $60 an ounce, and concern about a global economic slowdown drove the price of oil to its lowest since October.

"The big worry now is that this economic slowdown is widening and accelerating," said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, a market research firm.

It was the Dow's steepest one-day drop since November.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index and Nasdaq composite index both fell more than 3 percent. The Nasdaq has dropped more than 10 percent since its peak ? what traders call a market correction. The S&P 500 is just a point above correction territory.

American employers added just 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year, and the unemployment rate increased to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent. Economists had forecast a gain of 158,000 jobs.

The report, considered the most important economic indicator each month, also said that hiring in March and April was considerably weaker than originally thought.

Earlier data showed weak economic conditions in Europe and Asia, too. Unemployment in the 17 countries that use the euro currency stayed at a record-high 11 percent in April, and unemployment spiked to almost 25 percent in Spain.

There were signs that growth in China, which helped sustain the global economy through the recession, is slowing significantly. China's manufacturing weakened in May, according to surveys released Friday.

The Dow closed down 274.88 points, or 2.2 percent, at 12,118.57. The Dow is off 0.8 percent for the year; two months ago, it was up more than 8 percent for the year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 32.29 points, or 2.5 percent, to 1,278.04. The Nasdaq dropped 79.86, or 2.8 percent, to 2,747.48. Both indexes are still up for the year ? 1.6 percent for the S&P 500 and 5.5 percent for the Nasdaq.

Traders sold all types of risky investments and rushed to the safety of U.S. government bonds and gold. Bond prices rose sharply, briefly pushing the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note down to 1.44 percent, the lowest on record. The yield ended the day at 1.46 percent.

Gold for August delivery climbed $57.90, nearly 4 percent, to $1,622.10 per ounce.

"Everybody's looking for a safe haven," said Adam Patti, CEO of IndexIQ, an asset management firm. He's skeptical of that strategy, believing the swing was driven by short-term traders "looking to flip in and out of things," rather than long-term investors willing to ride out a few bumps in the market.

May was the worst month for the stock market in two years by some measures. Investors' worries about Europe's debt crisis intensified as the month wore on. Greece's political future is uncertain, and it appears increasingly likely to stop using the euro currency. That could rattle financial markets and make Greece's economy ? already hobbled ? even weaker.

Friday's jobs report drew traders' attention back to the weakening U.S. economy, said Todd Salamone, director of research for Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati.

"The weaker jobs report translates into anticipation of slower growth ahead and weaker corporate earnings, and that ratchets stock prices lower," Salamone said.

The record-low yield on the 10-year Treasury note reflected rapid buying by traders with the biggest portfolios, including central banks, endowments and pension funds, said Ira Jersey, U.S. interest rate strategist at Credit Suisse. He said money managers were selling investments priced in euros and stashing their money in U.S. securities.

Several analysts raised the possibility that the weakening economy will prompt more action by governments and central banks seeking to juice global economic activity. Anticipation of some policy response prevented even deeper losses, Stovall said.

The Federal Reserve undertook programs in 2009 and 2010 to buy U.S. government bonds. Its goal was to lower interest rates and encourage people to buy riskier investments like stocks. At least in public, the central bank so far has resisted a third round of purchases, known as quantitative easing.

Anticipation of bond-buying by the Fed "might put in a little bit of a floor to the market, but the overall economic picture is still bad," said Bob Gelfond, CEO of MQS Asset Management, a New York hedge fund.

The dollar fell partly because traders expect more intervention by the Federal Reserve, Gelfond said.

The euro rose half a penny against the dollar to above $1.24. A day earlier, fears about Europe's finances had pushed the euro to a nearly two-year low against the dollar.

Only 17 of the 500 companies in the S&P index were higher for the day.

Homebuilder stocks fell the most, despite a report that construction spending rose for a second month in April. PulteGroup fell 11.8 percent, D.R. Horton 8.4 percent and Lennar 8.3 percent.

Boeing, the biggest U.S. exporter, fell 3.4 percent, one of the biggest declines among the 30 companies that make up the Dow. Traders fear that the economic slowdown will hurt global demand for its airplanes and defense technologies.

A slower global economy would reduce demand for energy. The price of a barrel of oil fell $3.49 to $83.04, extending a monthlong slide. The price of oil is at a 16-month low.

Stocks closed way down in Europe. Greece's benchmark stock index fell 4.4 percent, Germany's 3.4 percent and France's 2.2 percent.

Why Zimbabwe's President Mugabe was named UN 'tourism envoy'

Zimbabwe's President Mugabe, who signed an agreement to co-host a UN tourism conference, now has an honorary position as envoy, despite a long record of human rights abuses.

At a ceremony in Victoria Falls, Mugabe said the agreement between Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the United Nations is of ?historical importance.?
?
??For our people, the signing of the agreement attests to our commitment, our readiness to welcome the entire tourism fraternity to our countries,? Mugabe was quoted by the independent Zimbabwe newspaper NewsDay as saying. ?For the UN World Tourism Organisation, on the other hand, the signatures testify to the confidence and trust that was bestowed upon us.?

That Mugabe, a man who faces a European Union travel ban and economic sanctions because of his repression and torture of opposition activists, would be named a UN envoy for tourism has drawn a certain amount of criticism.

Mr. Mugabe?s ruling party is accused of arresting, detaining, and in some cases killing members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change during the 2008 national elections. He later formed a coalition government with the MDC, after an 11-month stalemate in which the national currency became worthless and inflation soared to more than 1 million percent.

Mugabe is also blamed for a violent land-reclamation campaign, in which armed thugs stormed and took over the property of white commercial farmers, as well as the?Gukurahundi counterinsurgency campaign in the early 1980s against the rival ZAPO militant group in the Matabeleland region, which killed as many as 20,000 people.

So Mugabe?s selection as UN tourism envoy is not an obvious choice.

Butt-buzzing Cadillac is shaking up its image

Will a brand new model help boost Cadillac's slipping sales numbers? CNBC's Phil LeBeau reports on the key efforts General Motors has in place to revive Caddy sales.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com contributor

Cadillac is hoping to shake thing up ? quite literally ? with the launch of its new flagship sedan.?

Dubbed XTS, it?s equipped with a new ?Driver Awareness Package? that can spot a car hidden in the blind spot, sense when the driver is inadvertently slipping into the adjacent lane or if there?s a potential for a collision with the car ahead. Rather than flashing lights or sounding a buzzer, the sedan?s driver?s seat will begin to vibrate.

But Cadillac also intends to shake up the established order in the U.S. luxury market.?There was a time, not?many years ago, when the General Motors brand overwhelmingly dominated its competitors, both import and domestic.?Today, Cadillac is little more than a second-tier also-ran at home, and all but forgotten overseas.

?We intend to regain our mantle as the standard of the world,? said Don Butler, Cadillac?s vice president of marketing, during the first media drive of the new XTS, ?and we think we have the credentials to do it.?

The XTS effectively replaces two outgoing Caddy models, the STS and DTS.?But perhaps more importantly, it?s part of a wave of new products that the GM division promises to roll out in the coming years.?The big sedan goes up against the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.?The new ATS, which will launch a bit later this year, targets the like of the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4.

Butler broadly hints that Cadillac will move even more up-market in the not-too-distant future with a production version of the Ciel concept car that drew raves on the auto show circuit earlier this year. An updated prototype, according to sources, could be unveiled at next January?s Detroit Auto Show.

Even then, Cadillac officials admit, their line-up will still be relatively thin compared to competitors such as Mercedes.?The German maker now offers a score of coupes, sedans, convertibles, crossovers, sports cars and SUVs.

While Caddy doesn?t intend a one-for-one match, it is likely to continue rolling out at least one all-new model annually for the foreseeable future, GM CEO Dan Akerson announced during an appearance at the Beijing Motor Show in April.

?They?re still a work in progress,? said analyst Aaron Bragman, of IHS Automotive. ?But their share will grow simply by entering new segments.?

It?s not the first time Cadillac has hoped for a turnaround.?It began a much-ballyhooed ?renaissance? a decade ago with the launch of its first-generation CTS sedan.?That introduced the maker?s so-called Art & Science design theme, an edgy look that vaguely harkened back to such distinctive and dominant Cadillac offerings as the huge-finned ?59 Eldorado.

But a series of subsequent products, such as the short-lived XLR roadster, fell short of expectations, the revival all but running out of steam with the STS and DTS.?

Cadillac began to put things back on track with the launch of a second-generation CTS, especially when it pulled the wraps off the CTS Coupe, among the most distinctive offerings in today?s luxury car market.?And it beefed up its performance V-Series, the latest CTS-V one of the most powerful cars on the market.

The CTS will remain a centerpiece of the Cadillac line-up, though the next-generation sedan will grow slightly larger, to better position it between the compact ATS and full-size XTS.?Meanwhile, sources reveal that at least one more crossover-utility vehicle is in the works as a supplement to the current SRX model.

The SRX suggests Caddy could deliver some surprises.?The original version was largely ignored but the recent update is now challenging the long-time leader in the segment, the Lexus RX.

Like its competitors, meanwhile, Caddy is putting an increasing emphasis on technology, including not only the new Driver Awareness Package but also the Cadillac CUE system.?Unlike competitors? infotainment systems, CUE permits a motorist to give commands ? such as pairing a smartphone or entering a destination ? in plain English, rather than having to learn a complex hierarchy of rigid commands.

But commanding U.S. buyers back into the showroom is another matter entirely.?As recently as 1990, Cadillac routinely expected to sell a quarter-million vehicles annually.?Last year, that was down to barely 152,000, barely two-thirds the volume of key rivals like BMW, Lexus and Mercedes.?Worse, despite repeated efforts, Cadillac has largely failed to gain traction in the European market.

China is another story.?There, GM is itself the dominant maker and Cadillac is rapidly gaining ground. Analysts like Bragman believe it will do even better once it begins producing models like the XTS there later this year, sidestepping hefty import tariffs.?CEO Akerson told reporters during the Beijing show that his goal is boost Chinese Cadillac sales to 180,000 a year within a half-decade.

There was a time when Caddy defined the breed. The very name, Cadillac, showed up in the 1913 edition of Webster?s dictionary as the definition of the ultimate in perfection ? something the maker emphasized with a copy of the dictionary on display in Beijing.

While the term is still in use, it?s been a long time since Cadillac was seen as the pinnacle of the luxury car market. But not for lack of trying.? After its 2009 bankruptcy, GM is intent on regaining its broader global leadership and it needs Cadillac to be the simple of that resurrection.

'Just do it!' not good enough for cancer patients, researchers say

Exercise generally helps the nation's 12 million cancer survivors, but researchers are still working toward being able to prove, with scientific certainty, that prescriptions for daily yoga or 20 minutes of walking will likely extend a patient's survival.

Understanding specifically how exercise benefits subpopulations of cancer patients is among the big topics at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2012 annual meeting in Chicago, June 1-5, 2012. Several scientists from the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center are part of the ASCO discussion, including Lisa K. Sprod, Ph.D., a junior faculty member who is being recognized with an ASCO Merit Award.

"In 15 years we've gone from being afraid to recommend exercise to people with cancer, to having enough data that shows, by and large, it is safe and effective, particularly for relief of treatment side effects," said Karen Mustian, Ph.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of Radiation Oncology at URMC and an exercise psychologist specializing in cancer. "But when a patient walks in the door, he or she wants to know how to tailor exercise to their own situation. Should I bike, walk, or lift weights? Is there anything I should avoid? Can certain exercises lower my fatigue? And the scientific community has not settled into a place where we've developed explicit exercise prescriptions, or can effectively narrow the choices for patients."

Several URMC suggest that knowing how to develop and apply specific exercise programs (dose and timing to achieve a certain outcome) is a realistic goal.

Mustian and Sprod investigated physical activity among older people, a group they describe as often overlooked and underestimated in terms of their ability to live with cancer. On June 2 at ASCO they will present two studies in a session titled, Staying Bold While Old:

Mustian conducted a phase II clinical trial to discover whether six weeks of a home-based exercise plan (walking and resistance bands) improved cancer-related fatigue and strength in 58 men with prostate cancer who were treated with radiation and androgen deprivation therapy.

The mean age of the group was 67. The men had a wide range of fitness levels, from frailty to golfers who were fit and active. A control group that did no exercise was also established.

Researchers measured cardiopulmonary function (through a gold-standard test called Vo2-peak) and muscular strength, and found that all exercisers improved while the control group declined in performance. The most significant information, Mustian said, was that everyone who exercised regularly achieved some added benefit ? even the fittest participants.

A larger study is planned to explore whether the physiological effects of exercise are responsible for improvements, or if a psychological component is also present, such as the personal attention one often gains from an exercise program, or the camaraderie of being with friends at a gym.

Sprod investigated the appropriate amount, type, and intensity of exercise in cancer survivors older than 65, who are also experiencing the natural functional declines associated with aging. The double hit, she said, is an understudied issue.

After analyzing a national sample of 14,887 people, Sprod established that older cancer survivors engage in less physical activity ? even routine activity such as stooping, lifting, and walking ? than people without a history of cancer. This may lead to less independence, a higher risk of the cancer coming back, and reduced survival.

The study raises new questions, such as whether the treatment contributes to less activity, or whether patients and physicians are worried about the safety of becoming physically active during and after cancer treatment, or a combination of the two factors, Sprod said.

In another exercise-related study, Luke J. Peppone, Ph.D., a research assistant professor, investigated the effects of a yoga program on women with breast cancer who were taking aromatase inhibitors, medications that deplete estrogen and often cause severe menopause-like symptoms. A frequent complaint is joint pain and muscle aches, sometimes making it difficult for women to get out of bed or grip a fork and knife.

Peppone said a high percentage of breast cancer survivors discontinue aromatase inhibitor therapy because of side effects, putting them at greater risk for cancer recurrence. His study measured the self-reported quality of life and physical discomfort among 95 women taking aromatase inhibitors and 72 women who were not taking the drug.

Each group took part in a four-week gentle yoga program. The women taking aromatase inhibitors reported a significant reduction in pain, muscle aches, and total physical discomfort, Peppone said. The study will serve as a pilot to launch a larger study of exercise to relieve musculoskeletal pain.

His research, as well as Sprod's study, also was selected for presentation at the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer meeting in June in New York.

Finally, a controlled study of yoga therapy in middle-aged, mostly female cancer survivors showed that a four-week, customized gentle yoga plan significantly reduced perceived difficulty with memory. Michelle C. Janelsins, Ph.D., research assistant professor at Wilmot, randomized patients to one of two groups: standard follow-up care after receiving adjuvant cancer treatment, and standard care plus a program that consisted of breathing exercises, gentle Hatha and Restorative yoga postures, and meditation.

The yoga group had significantly reduced memory difficulty compared to the standard care control group.

Improved memory also partially contributed to improved fatigue and improved quality of life, Janelsins noted.

In some ways, Mustian said, the exercise-and-cancer dilemma harkens to the days when it was not known what types of chemotherapy and how much should be given to cancer patients. Through rigorous scientific inquiry, physicians were able to refine the way they prescribe and administer chemo ? and Mustian believes the same refinement is possible with exercise.

"I think we do an incredible disservice to people who have just been diagnosed with cancer when we say, 'Just do it!' Mustian added. "Sometimes we see 72-year-olds who are more fit than 55-year-olds, and so it is best to look at functional capacity, and then to be as specific as possible when it comes to personalizing exercise for people with cancer. Otherwise we are sending mixed messages."

Sprod, a research assistant professor, will receive the ASCO Pain and Symptom Management Research Merit Award; she is one of 4 young investigators whose ASCO research presentations were selected for a high impact. All exercise studies were funded through a variety of private and government sources, including the National Cancer Institute.

phoenixnutritionals.com (CLICK HERE) Arthritis is a progressive chronic degenerative condition caused by the bodys inability to replace lost cartilage. In the early stages such things as sports injuries to a particular joint or an accident that has damaged one or more joints may cause arthritis, but in the vast majority of cases, arthritis is the result of a breakdown of protein absorption and a lack of key essential minerals needed to repair and maintain connective tissue strength. Exercise plays a major role in keeping the body flexible. Exercise and arthritis can often be uncomfortable but exercise for the arthritis sufferer is essential. You should begin with only what you can comfortably do, but slowly try and increase both duration and resistance of the exercise. By exercising, we can keep the joints and especially the connective, supportive tissues flexible. The best time to gain control over the arthritis process is as early on in the disease process as possible. The longer arthritis ravages the joints of the body, the greater the potential permanent damage that can occur. Almost all arthritic conditions begin with the inability for the body to replace worn cartilage. Every time you move a joint, the friction of the bones on the cartilage wears microscopic amounts of cartilage tissue away. This is normal and causes no problem as long as the body is able to replace the cartilage tissue at the same rate it is worn away. When we are young, this is usually not a ?
